C283 – Ask for Rain?

Yang Sui put down the ox’s tail and stood up.
Seeing Yang Sui randomly dropping the tail, next to him, the young girl stared. She then squatted carefully to pick up that tail and put it in a long wooden box covered with a layer of hay next to them.
Yang Sui smiled. “As for that. It’s useless anyway.”After a brief introduction, Shao Xuan knew that the young girl was called Mi Fu and she grew up together with Yang Sui. Now, she was also following the Yang Sui as one of the shaman participating in the ceremony.
“I have heard that your Flaming Horns tribe was back. Did you come with those people from the central region?” Yang Sui asked.
“Yes.” Then, looking at the two people’s complexion, Shao Xuan asked, “How about your side, what happened? You’re going to be kicked out?”
Yang Sui scratched his head. “Sort of.”
After a while of silence, Yang Sui continued, “Being tagged as an incompetent Shaman is ok, and I can live with that. But what’s worse now is that I might be burned to death.”
Snap!
Next to the Mi Fu’s hand was the wooden box thrown with the ox’s tail carefully put into the box falling out like it didn’t matter. With red eyes, she shouted, “You haven’t called for rain yet. How do you know that?”“Everybody knows that.” Yang Sui smiled with frustration, “It is just a matter of being burned to death sooner or later.”
“Why did you lie when you knew that? Just say you can’t ask for rain, why shouldn’t you admit it?” Mi Fu’s tears were shed. She readily wiped her face, regardless of whether the dust on her hand would be on her face. She returned the tail on the ground to the box, slammed the lid close, then strode out. When she ran out, she kicked the half-folded doors closed.
Shao Xuan looked at the door after Mi Fu ran away, then looked at the stunned Yang Sui standing in the same place, “What’s the matter? What happened?”
Shao Xuan knew that, when Yang Sui originally competed as a Shaman candidate, he observed the time that it would rain, then a coincidence was made, and he finally pressed the other competitors.
Yang Sui’s complexion was uglier than crying, “I regret that!” Recalling the situation at that time, he wanted to die. He should have confessed from the pressure of the chief.
Seeing Shao Xuan once again was rare but then, the situation was like this. Yang Sui explained briefly to Shao Xuan.
When he returned from his travel, he smoothly became the Shaman. However, at the end of last year, the new chief took office, which originally supported another competitor, and they didn’t know where he learned that Yang Sui was “cheating”. When Yang Sui took the stage, they constantly looked for trouble. In addition to that, this year started without a drop of rain, so the new chief caught the opportunity to let Yang Sui call for rain.
Yang Sui said that it was difficult to do.
If it was anyone else, it wouldn’t be a problem. However, if the new chief wanted to pull his own candidate up, then he would openly question Yang sui’s ability to call for rain. If his previous call for rain was just coincidence and not by real ability, then he also deceived everyone, which was disrespectful to the ancestors and the totem. For this reason, God had punished them, making this year until now without a drop of rain. If this goes on, as the weather gets hotter, the land would dry up quickly, and the crops won’t last long. With some agitation, they would reason out that Yang Sui deceived the gods.
What was that? That the idea of admitting him was the chief’s predecessor’s? Bah! Even daring to slander the late chief. You should burn Yang Sui to death!
“The chief asked me to call for rain, and if it would not come down, it meant I provoked the gods, and they’ll burn me to quell the wrath of god.” Yang Sui took out the ox’s tail in the box and shook it randomly, as he continued to speak, “In fact, many people know that we can’t ask for rain. They know it was an excuse, but there was no way to stop it since the chief spoke. Under his encouragement, many people really think that if I can’t get it to rain, burning me would solve the problem.”
Previously, Yang Sui was able to take the position with the former chief ordering it. The former chief knew that it was a coincidence with the rain called by Yang Sui, but he needed to stabilize the tribe and needed an opportunity to expand his reputation. Then, he put the pressure on Yang Sui’s intention to justify it.
“How many people are there to support you now?” Shao Xuan asked.
Since the chief did not dared to have Yang Sui burned to death directly, dragging things as such meant he certainly still have some scruples.
“Mine compared with the chief’s supporters, more than half to half. But after the day after tomorrow, there probably would be no one supporting me anymore.” Yang Sui gave a wry smile.
“The day after tomorrow, was that the time to ask for rain?” Shao Xuan asked.
“Yes, I’ve been preparing for it for the last few days. I practiced a few times privately, and these ox’s tails are what I practiced with.” Yang Sui was holding the tail to Shao Xuan, depressed, “Yesterday, the ox’s tail was broken by me. This is a new one.”
“Do you still have to use the tail even for practice?”
“Yes,” Yang Sui shook the ox’s tail on his hand, “since when the time came to ask for rain, I have to carry a tail. But this one is just for me to practice. When I formally ask for rain, I will use another carefully prepared tail which my supporters got for me. It is not something to be played with casually.”
“What are you going to do? If you not manage to call for rain, will you really stay here to be burned?”
“What else can I do?” Yang Sui spread his hand, “Before thinking about trying to ran away, I have to think of my family and friends here. The tribe is here, the fire seed is here, where can I run? I don’t want to be a wanderer, I don’t want to be a slave. I would rather be burn to death!”
The room was silent for a moment.
“When is the next rain? Is the rainy season coming up?” Shao Xuan asked.
“There will be no rain in the near future. As for the rainy season, it will come here after the full moon, later compared to other places.” Yang Sui explained.
This was a real problem. If the rainy season did not arrive, the sky would not give rain, so Shao Xuan could also not think of a temporary solution. Artificial rainfall? This place was where everything was different, so Shao Xuan really has nothing.
“I’ll go back for now.” Yang Sui said, “And hey, while I am still the Shaman, I can give you some delicious food. I’ll have people give you more water and food later.”
Shao Xuan looked out from the broken window, just seeing the blue sky now becoming a little cloudy and gray. Dust began to rise in the air outside.
“If you continue to stay here for two days, you can still see me get burned.” Yang Sui laughed at himself. Holding the wooden box with the ox’s tail in his hands, he turned to go outside, “I advise you to go back early too, and go out less tomorrow.”
When Shao Xuan got out of the cabin and went back to their resting place, the visibility in the surroundings has dropped a lot. The sky was a muddy yellow. The wind blowing was wrapped in dust and sand, blotting out everything. People out there were having trouble breathing, squinting at each other and choking on the dust from time to time.
For the people of the Rain tribe, they were accustomed to it, but for the young travelers who came out for the first time, they were not adapting well. Looking at the dim sky, the people were having a dull mood.
“I think the place where our tribe is located is really good.” Lei looked out at the weather outside, then shut the window, turning to Shao Xuan.
For Lei and Tuo, they were willing to live in the Ferocious Beast Mountain forest, but not here to be in such a windy and dry land. However, for the Rain tribe, they were the opposite and would rather live in such a place, not wanting to step into the Ferocious Beast Mountain forest.
“It’s all like this outside. Let’s go to bed early. Maybe when we get up, there will be no sand outside.” Tuo had a very optimistic thought.
Shao Xuan not so optimistic. Yang Sui said it would be better not to go out tomorrow. Obviously, it would be worse than today. In this case, Shao Xuan would still choose to believe in Yang Sui.
As for the rain…
Instead of the Rain tribe worshiping the water from the sky, it was better to say that these people really worship the powerful force behind the object of “rain”. The rain was just a messenger of the power, a stage the strong and mysterious power had set. Whoever could ask for rain, they would think he had such power, so they would worship him wholeheartedly.
However, it was unclear whether that power really exists and how powerful it was.
Note: Saying this won’t be a spoiler, right? Anyway, I’ll say it. There will be a few cliffs in the next chapters, so hold on tight. I decided to still edit as I read since rereading again when I edit was really tedious. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
