C288 – Asking for Rain (V)
Posted on October 17, 2018 by AzureOrchid92
For the Rain Tribe’s totem, above was a curved look, while under the arc was a rain-like point. Shao Xuan counted and it was eight points. Around the totem, there were some fog-like things flowing around.
When the totem of Drumming tribe appeared in this “eggshell”, Shao Xuan was very surprised, and now, the Rain tribe’s totem also appeared.
Was it good compatibility, Shao Xuan thought.Although the totem was not as large as the Flaming Horns tribe’s totem in the middle and not as bright, it does exist here and was still flashing.
The appearance of this Rain tribe’s totem was not the same as the fire of the Flaming Horns’ totem but similar to the Drumming tribe, partial white with some translucent feeling, such as a liquid in general.
Shao Xuan observed the flashing Rain tribe’s totem, mobilized his power of inheritance and wanted to go up close to see this sudden appearance of a different tribal totem.
The blue flames separated from the bottom end of the Flaming Horns totem and stretched out to the small Rain tribe totem that appeared.
Supposedly, there should be repulsion between the forces of different tribal totems, but not here. The isolated blue flame easily touched the totem of the Rain tribe.
At the time of contact, Shao Xuan felt the Rain tribe totem quiver, the eight points also moving. Shao Xuan became curious, that eight points looked more like a drop of floating liquid.
A bright liquid at one point dropped down from the totem of the Rain tribe. Shao Xuan was staring at the falling point, originally intending to see where it would fall. That drop just fell down a bit below the Rain tribe totem, then turned into a fog, adding to the mist surrounding the Rain tribe totem. Looking back at the totem, where it originally dropped, the gap has been mended, and a drop the same as before appeared in its place. That’s just the beginning though. It’s like pressing the start switch of the Rain tribe totem. Gradually, it began again, just the same as before, dropped down, became a fog, and then form again.
The beginning was a drop, then two drops, until all the way up to eight drops. They all began to move, rotating, looking like it was constantly raining.
Somehow, Shao Xuan suddenly remembered what Yang Sui had said to him about the Rain tribe’s fire seed.
Yang Sui had said that the Rain tribe’s fire seed have a problem. Except for the big ritual at the beginning of the year, it was difficult to wake up at other times which was the reason why calling for rain has failed.
But now, Shao Xuan felt that this totem that moves was like it was awakening from its slumber gradually.
Shao Xuan had a shock when he felt a powerful force from the outside world.
Out of his sea of consciousness, Shao Xuan looked to the side.
Although because of weather reasons the room was so dark, Shao Xuan could still see Lei and Tuo’s reactions. The two men who had been resting stood up and looked into the direction of the Rain tribe.
“What’s going on?”
“Why is there such a strong totem force?”
Feeling the repulsion of this sudden and different tribal totem, Lei and Tuo opened the door and went out.
Outside, the dust was all over, more than the last two days. The hair of Tuo was blown up, and his eyes narrowed into a seam by the scattered dust. The smell was lot more clearer between breaths.
The sky and surroundings was filled with yellow dust, making the visibility very low. It was already a bit laborious to see the rows of wooden houses, what more for the Rain tribe that was farther away?
They wanted to see what was going on over there, but only a muddy sand was in their eyes.
Shao Xuan slightly covered his face with his hands to block the dust that was blowing over his face. Listening carefully, he could hear that the voices there were noisy. There were too many people that he did not know what the other side was talking about. But he could clearly feel the strength of the totem that was growing in that direction.
It was not only Shao Xuan and the two who felt this. The travel team came out their huts but found that there was no visibility around. The sand storm was still big that after shouting and complaining a few words, they went back to their houses.
“Say, what the hell is going on over there? Was there such a big rain movement?” someone asked.
“I don’t know what’s happening, but it’s not going to rain anyway.”
“Whatever happened, I just hope the weather will get better and we can leave.”
Inside the Rain Tribe, in the altar built above the fire pit, Yang Sui and the other people doing the rain dance, message and other rituals had finished. Finally, they all kneeled with their foreheads on ground, knocking on the board full of sand and did not get up.
Yang Sui and the rest of the people on their knees were all the same, silent, waiting for death. They had no intention of getting off from this plateau.
The wooden nut bells tied at their waists swayed with the wind and kept making a sound that was like a rain shower, but it was not real.
At the end of the ceremony, the music and dancing ceased. Under the altar, the people kneeling down were somewhat disappointed. Although it had always failed for many years, they were still holding to that little hope everytime, hoping that it would really rain. Meanwhile, some people have been accustomed to this situation every year, with only numbness on their faces. The others were happy in their hearts, for example, He Chao who once competed with Yang Sui for the Shaman position.
He Chao looked at the chief in front, taking two steps forward as he whispered, “Ok.”
The chief’s eyes were flashing, but he looked at the old man a few steps away. Among them, there were their supporters and there were some neutrals. He was worried about those who were neutral.
Fortunately, the call for rain was a failure. Those whose faces were colored with disappointment did not hide. Seeinb this, the chief’s mouth could not help but rise, then he loudly said, “Because Yang Sui deceived the gods, did contrary to what the ancestors said and provoked the wrath of the rain god, from today onwards, he will no longer be the Shaman of the tribe!”
The chief and He Chao looked around at the people who had opposed them before, as they were now silent. Very good.
After the chief spoke, He Chao suppressed the excitement in his heart and shouted, “Burn the firewood!”
Several people have been waiting over there to carry a bundle of firewood and grass, placing it around the top of the platform to the top of the upper section.
With the movement below, the people on the top of the platform heard very clearly.
With the gradual approach of the firewood, Yang Sui spoke in the high platform for all others to hear, “I’m sorry!”
Under the stage, He Chao, as the most likely successor to the Shaman position after Yang Sui, took the lighted torch and walked to the edge of the platform, igniting a bundle of firewood.
“Burn them!”
“Burn to death, Burn to death!”
“Those who violate the ancestors and provoke the rain god should burn!”
Listening to the noises below, Yang Sui closed his eyes with everyone as they waited for death. The call for rain was a failure, and almost consumed all his energy. He was weary, desperate, mournful.
Suddenly, Yang Sui’s body trembled and his closed eyes suddenly opened, his eyes full of disbelief. Feeling it carefully, yes! Fire! It’s the fire seed!
Below, the person who originally shouted “burn to death” also noticed that something was wrong, especially those close to the fire pit who felt it was particularly pronounced.
Such power, they were too familiar with it. Every year during the great sacrifice, this feeling would appear. But now, it was not the time for the great sacrifice and the situation was different now compared to the great sacrifice.
The surrounding temperature began to drop rapidly.
Through those firewood they set up, they saw that the fire in the firepit’s color changed and became lighter, becoming white and translucent.
“This … This is …”
The sand around the fire pit seemed to fade away, the field of vision clearing a lot.
An old man with a palm full of callused skin twisted his chapped fingers, feeling his fingers were a little moist. Looking up to the fire pit and then seeing the building fire above the platform, his original vacant look became shocked, and he loudly shouted, “Fire! Kill the fire! Get out of the way!” Because he was too excited, there was some break in the sound of his voice. He ran to the top of the platform, ignoring the burning firewood, and swung his arm and kicked the wood out of the way.
The chief just felt a chill straight on his head which startled a shiver from him. Almost at the fastest speed, he rushed over with the old man and kicked off the firewood. Others have also reacted, no matter what, they followed.
The people far away could not see the situation around the fire pit. They could only listen to the movement to guess what happened. Though it was unclear, they were able to feel the familiar power of the fire seed.
Within the fire pit, the flame become white and translucent, starting from the top, turning into a white mist, like a water dragon rushing out from the fire pit.
The temperature around it was even lower.
The firewood, which had not been kicked off, was extinguished in a moment when it was swept by the mist.
When Yang Sui saw what happened below, he did not get up and just looked up in the sky. Then, the face that was stiff like a stone split, showing an expression that seemed like surprise.
The sky looked like there was going to be a little rain…
Below, around the fire pit, the white mist was like a long dragon, circling around. Then, with the increase of its body, it circled more and more wider, standing in the vicinity of the fire pit that the people could not help but move backward.
They were not sure what this change was all about, but there was a hint of speculation in their hearts that they could hardly believe.
As the foggy dragon hovered, the piles erected on stilts, the piles of firewood that had not been lighted or had been extinguished, were like a layer of white frost.
The long lines of fog were still expanding rapidly, and the chaotic sensation caused by the dust was rapidly disappearing from the firepit, moving outward.
Taking a deep breath could make one feel a refreshing coolness. There was no dust smell which made the people shocked. It felt like their whole person was being poured with a bucket of ice water.
Because of this change, the rest of the Rain tribe felt silly. They didn’t know what it means. They didn’t know how to react now, and even the chief didn’t speak.
“Is … Isn’t it…… Rain…… It worked?” Someone stuttered to ask the people around.
Others have tried to refute what they had experienced, but after seeing the sight there, they closed their mouths.
