Chapter 305
The forest, once so bright, is suddenly plunged into darkness, leaving only a stark silence.
The spirits burst through the silence.
-What? The flames are gone?
-No, it’s not gone…….-The flames…… have turned to darkness.
The spirits’ faces turned dumbfounded at the sight of the flame, which had become as black as they were.
“It shouldn’t be too difficult to find those hiding in the forest, right?”
Bright red flames glowed in the center of the dark forest.
That had to be the gathering place of the fire spirits who had done this.
-How the hell…… did you do it? I’ve never seen darkness swallow a flame before.
Light pushing out darkness was a natural law to them. Indeed, the beings that had banished them to this place were Light Spirits. This was a natural law to them. Indeed, the being that had banished them to this place was not even a Spirit of Light.
But they had forgotten.
“Light is only as good as the darkness that covers it.”
In the end, it is the darkness that surrounds the light.
-Aaaah!
The sound of my clap drew everyone’s attention to me.
“Now that I’ve shown you what I can do, I’d like to see what our new recruits can do.”
I smile and look at their leader Black Hand.
Then, as if it was no problem, he drew his own sword from his waistband.
-Hunting in the dark, it’s a daily routine, leave it to me.
The pitch-black sword, which seemed to absorb the light around it, was very fitting for a ‘dark spirit’.
Still…..doesn’t look like a good spec for me. Let’s not take that one.
-Hunt the enemy!
Black Hand flashes out, signaling the other spirits to start running toward the back of the forest.
“Let’s see what they’ve got.”
I follow behind them, keeping my distance.
With familiarity, they leap from branch to branch or use the trees for cover as they race toward their destination.
They clearly understand and utilize their home turf.
‘They don’t even make a sound.’
Perhaps the enemies were unaware of the Dark Spirits’ approach, staring at the suddenly blackened pillar of fire.
Once I’m in a position where I can see what’s going on around me, I decide to take my time and observe how the Dark Spirits hunt.
-What the hell is going on?!
-Why the hell are those……flames?
-We’ve never seen anything like that before! How the hell did they do that……?!
At that moment, a blade imbued with the power of the darkness is embedded in the breastplate of one of the Fire Spirits.
The elemental collapses in a heap, clutching his chest.
-Such an attack!
Realizing they’ve just been attacked, the fire elementals form a circle of protection.
-Where is the enemy?!
-It’s hard to tell!
-Then light a fire around us!
They first try to gain visibility by breathing fire around them.
But,
“No way.”
The flames turn into black flames, preventing them from seeing their surroundings.
There’s a limited number of times I can form black flames where there aren’t any, but it wasn’t too difficult to turn the flames into black flames.
-Bu, the flames are all turning black──Ka?!
-Damn it, retreat! We’re exiting the forest!
Eventually, the slowly dwindling numbers forced them to retreat from the forest but what hunter would allow his prey to escape the hunting grounds?
Especially when it’s dark all around, and the targets are the only ones glowing.
The outcome was obvious.
-Oh, help!
-Aah!
-Get away from me, you abomination!
Sometimes they lurk in the shadows, sometimes they rob their enemies of their senses, and sometimes they do what dark spirits do best.
Less than three minutes passed before all the fire spirits in the forest were extinguished.
-……Thanks to Master Eugene, I was able to defeat the enemies without difficulty.
Suddenly, Black Hand came to my side and brushed off the sword that was still stained with the dying flames.
“Master, suddenly?”
-Because as of today, we are Corleone, and according to our contract, our boss is Vito Corleone. By human standards, Eugene, your last name is the same, so you’re not the boss’s son, are you? Perhaps, the humans call you Crown Prince?
“Master……is fine.”
A crown prince. Just hearing that made me shudder.
“You have quite the fighting force, you really did hunt them all down.”
-Thanks to you, Master, for putting out the flames. We’re only truly effective in the dark.
They were right.
Where there is darkness, the dark spirits are more powerful.
We could ‘create’ that darkness, so it was a good synergy.
From Corleone’s point of view, it was a great deal of power to have.
“I wonder what they’ll do when they find out about this.”
-You mean the Spirit State? They’ll probably panic and be furious.
“Aren’t you afraid?”
-We’re outcasts, after all. They’ll want to retaliate in some way.
“Really?”
Then I’ll just have to make it so they can’t even think about retaliating.
I put my hand on the shoulder of Black Hand standing beside me.
“Let’s go back. I think we need to talk more about the supplies you’re about to receive and the rules of Corleone.”
I had a strong feeling I was going to be busy again, but why?
I was feeling pretty good.
* * *
The support for the Darkness Family came slowly but surely.
Luckily, they were able to get there quickly, thanks to the number of subspaces that the Corleone had set aside for support and transportation, as well as the dark spirits themselves coming out to the outskirts of the DMZ to guide them.
“Uh, put that in the warehouse over there. Weapons to the right!”
I was in the center of the crowd, waving a glow stick enthusiastically and directing the scene.
Black Hand and the dark spirits could only stare, dumbfounded, at the endless stream of relief supplies pouring in from the entrance.
-Can this much stuff really come from one organization?
“Oh, this?”
Was that a surprise?
“Corleone stockpiles supplies for the Foreign Area in case of disaster. Don’t worry, I didn’t bring that much.”
Suddenly, I realized that they were no different from the people who had settled in the Foreign Area.
After all, they were outcasts and had no one to protect them but themselves.
Then. Latte, the newest volunteer, came running up to them with a big smile on her face.
“Master, I’m glad to see you’re in good health!”
“Latte, you volunteered?”
It was quite unexpected to see her in the field, as she was supposed to be in the intelligence department.
The answer was simpler than I thought.
“It’s the DMZ, right? It’s also a national-scale event that the monsters have accomplished. That’s why I came out here to help you, right?”
“What about the Academy?”
I told her that I’d be out mentoring for a bit longer, but she should still be working at the cafe, right?
“A~ That’s what they call part-time workers~”
“What about their school?”
“Oh, that’s right, tomorrow is the school’s opening day, luckily we have a day off!”
Well, if you have a part-time worker, it’s not a big deal.
Honestly, having someone like Late come in at a time like this was a huge help.
“Thank you for coming to help. I could really use the extra hands.”
“You don’t need to thank me.”
Latte scratched her head in embarrassment and replied.
Even as she did, she glanced at the dark spirits hovering around her.
“But I can’t tell you how surprised I was when I heard the news. A new family, the first new family in decades, really, except for yours?”
As she said, this new Darkness Family was absolutely nothing compared to the other families.
The number of people alone is at least several hundred.
They have a lair the size of a small city, and the combat power of each one of them is comparable to that of any Awakened, so it’s a formidable force.
“In fact, the other members of the Family are looking at this pretty badly, as it’s a new organization that could threaten their family at any moment.”
“Alas, I think I know what it is.”
It was weird not to feel uneasy.
Who wouldn’t be afraid of a force that could rival their own?
If I were in their shoes, I might have thought something similar, unless, of course, the newcomers were ‘spirits’.
“You shouldn’t worry too much about that. The spirits are bound by a ‘contract’ with Corleone, after all.”
“A contract?”
“Yes, you know the Elementals’ contract with the Elementalists. Think of it as a change in organizational structure. No betrayal, obey orders, that sort of thing.”
In other words, they’re a faction that you don’t have to worry about betraying, a race that will never betray you if you make a good deal with them, but will listen to orders, what a great race.
“Well, I doubt you’d do anything to harm the organization, after all, that’s why the other officers didn’t turn you in for this.”
“What are you talking about?”
“That…….”
Latte explained the situation to me.
After posting a report on the DMZ to father, she said, he held a separate meeting with executives from around the world.
The topic of the meeting was the creation of a new family and support for it.
Unsurprisingly, the other Dons were vehemently opposed to this agenda but that’s where my father is said to have said
‘I hope you’ll reconsider, because this is an opportunity that Eugene earned by talking to the president.’
And that’s when, apparently, things changed.
-What? My nephew did it? I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt!
-Don, why are you saying that now? Just let it go through!
-Eugene’s trying to get it right for once, heh, heh, heh! I’m sure we can overlook one or two mistakes for Eugene, so I’ll vote for it.
-He talked to the president? Sounds interesting. I’ll be on the sidelines.
Public opinion changed in an instant.
And just like that, it was passed almost unanimously.
It was a side of my father’s story I never knew.
“All of this is the result of your accomplishments in Corleone, isn’t it?”
After all……uncles.
“Then I shouldn’t disappoint them.”
I craned my neck from side to side and looked at my favorite spirits as I surveyed the new arrivals and the crates of supplies.
Then, shall we begin with a lesson in Corleone-style education?
