Path of Medicine With a System
-
chapter-105
Medical reports in internal medicine could really reflect a doctor’s medical abilities. The doctor’s analysis of an illness, thoughts on what medicine to use, and so on would all be recorded in the medical report for others to read as well. Zhang Fan’s foundational knowledge of internal medicine was only average. In fact, he had only really started accumulating a foundation when he was first rotated into an internal medicine department. Now that he was in another internal medicine department, he definitely wouldn’t let go of this chance to study from such a large number of medical reports.
Zhang Fan sat in front of the computer for three consecutive hours without getting up a single time. Meanwhile, Zhu Qianqian had gone to the bathroom once and poured water for Zhang Fan twice.
“Doctor Zhang, there’s no hurry. You just have to finish all the medical reports by tonight, but if you really can’t finish, it’s fine to just finish them tomorrow. Have some coffee that my husband especially purchased for me. It’s quite tasty.”
Zhu Qianqian was absolutely delighted because Zhang Fan was such a hard worker. In fact, he was even more hardworking than she was. She felt as if she had picked up a treasure! Since he was so hardworking, Zhu Qianqian even acted quite magnanimous (by her standards). She made coffee for him, constantly brought him water, washed fruits for him, and so on.
Zhang Fan wasn’t bored with these medical reports even in the slightest. He started carefully studying and comparing the medical reports, learning much knowledge and experience from them. Previously, when he was in the cardiovascular department of internal medicine, his teaching doctor Ye Jing had far fewer medical reports, so he hadn’t learned anywhere near as much.Cardiologist Ye Jing was the type who was satisfied with doing as little work as possible. She preferred to have as few patients as possible, and to always get off work on time. This was in direct contrast to the hardworking pulmonologist Zhu Qianqian’s personality.
“Doctor Zhu, why wasn’t this patient given a respiratory stimulant?” Zhang Fan asked while pointing at a patient’s medical record.
“Ah, this patient? I asked Director Jumabieke about it at the time. He said that this patient’s lungs are already weakening, and that using a respiratory stimulant would only worsen the patient’s carbon dioxide retention.”
“Oh, I see.”
“You don’t even know how strict our department director is. My medical reports would already count as excellent medical reports in other departments. In your surgery departments, medical reports are all about copy and paste. That won’t work for us. Director Jumabieke will refuse to approve our medical reports unless we write some personal analysis. Sigh~! Such a waste of my time.”
Zhang Fan felt as if he was breaking out in a cold sweat from listening to Zhu Qianqian’s complaints. ‘She really is so shameless. She makes quite a lot of typos in her medical reports that I’m fixing for her, yet she complains about the director being strict? Also, no matter how simple a surgical medical report is, all records of each surgery are unique and must be typed up. If you were a webnovel author, you would be cursed to death!’ He didn’t even know how to verbally respond to this.
Still, Zhu Qianqian was truly hardworking. She had by far the most patients out of every single pulmonologist, with more than double the number of patients of the doctor with the fewest patients. Average doctors would at most take care of around eight patients simultaneously because they wouldn’t have the energy to care for more at once. Luckily, Director Jumabieke was incredibly strict, and liked to personally check up on the patients himself. Otherwise, there would have definitely been problems with how aggressively Zhu Qianqian took patients.Director Jumabieke couldn’t really say anything about Zhu Qianqian’s behavior. Was he supposed to criticize her for working hard and taking care of more patients? It wasn’t like he could forbid her from taking patients.
Zhu Qianqian was just like Doraemon, constantly snacking on something.
There were many infectious diseases in the respiratory department, so Zhu Qianqian was constantly washing her hands. Zhang Fan didn’t really like to eat snacks, and was enthralled by reading all these medical reports, so he didn’t want to lose time by getting up to wash his hands. But, he constantly heard Zhu Qianqian snacking away as if she was a mouse. Actually, it would have been quite easy for him to just fix her medical reports as there were standard formats for the medical reports. But, actually studying and learning from them would require concentration. Zhang Fan was quite annoyed by her snacking sounds. ‘No wonder she said that she doesn’t eat dinner! With how she constantly snacks, of course she won’t be hungry at night!’
It really couldn’t be helped. But, honestly, Zhang Fan really would have gone elsewhere to finish the medical reports if it weren’t for the fact that he needed to learn more about respiratory basics from Zhu Qianqian.
“Doctor Zhang, there’s no need to be so careful with the medical reports. You just need to look them over briefly and fix them up. They’re all in the same format. Just make sure that the patient medication is correct. Oh, and fix any typos that you see, along with whatever sections were marked wrong by the director as the reason for rejecting my medical report.”
Zhu Qianqian was also fixing her own medical reports on another computer together with Zhang Fan. She would finish fixing three medical reports before Zhang Fan had finished a single one. If it weren’t for the fact that Zhang Fan hadn’t left his computer at all, she would have felt that Zhang Fan had been slacking off.
“It’s fine. This is only the second internal medicine department I’ve been in. Doctor Zhu, your medical reports are useful for my studies.” Zhang Fan ignored her suggestion to go faster. If all he did was fix her medical reports without actually learning from them, all of this would be meaningless. It wasn’t like he was fixing her medical reports just for the sake of fixing them. If he didn’t gain anything at all, of course he wouldn’t be willing to spend any all-nighters here!
Although Zhu Qianqian had a lot of work due to all the patients she had, she really was a fast worker. She was also a really fast typer who almost never used her mouse. She skillfully used all sorts of keyboard shortcuts to swiftly copy, paste, modify, and rearrange her medical reports.
“You should learn how to use these keyboard shortcuts. They’ll really improve your speed. I learned all this from my many years of experience. Compared to using a mouse, using keyboard shortcuts will save you three minutes per medical report on average. Just think about it, with 30 medical reports, you can save 90 minutes! And if you finish the medical reports earlier, you’ll also be able to rest earlier.”
Zhu Qianqian was really quite extreme in her shortcutting. ‘Are you supposed to be a professional typist or a pulmonologist?’ Zhang Fan couldn’t help but wonder inwardly.
“Doctor Zhu, patient #33 is having breathing difficulties. He’s pressed the bell to summon assistance. I checked his condition. His oxygen saturation level is a little low.” A nurse entered the doctors’ resting area and called Zhu Qianqian.
“I’ll go check his condition. Maybe phlegm has blocked his air passage. Doctor Zhang, you can stay here and continue fixing the medical reports,” Zhu Qianqian said as she got up and grabbed her stethoscope.
However, Zhang Fan hadn’t come here just for the sake of writing medical reports for Zhu Qianqian. He wanted to actually learn during his rotation. Naturally, he would refuse to be left out during an emergency situation like this one.
“It’s fine, I’ll go check things out as well.” Zhang Fan also got up and grabbed his stethoscope as he said this, causing Zhu Qianqian to pout.
Patient #33 was an elderly man in his 70s. He had smoked for more than 50 years already, resulting in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary heart disease, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol. This time, he had been hospitalized due to being infected after catching a cold.
“That Doctor Chen in charge of you is so irresponsible. You have so much phlegm, yet he didn’t even prescribe you some Ambroxol to break up your phlegm, letting you breathe phlegm all night long. So much trouble!” Zhu Qianqian complained.
She didn’t speak very loudly, but she still spoke intentionally loud enough so that the old patient could hear her. He got so angry that he slammed his hand against his hospital bed. His face had gotten completely red with anger under his hospital face mask.
“Sir, please don’t be angry. I’ll have a talk to the director tomorrow and have him properly scold Doctor Chen.” Zhu Qianqian was quite sly, and instantly managed to calm down the old patient with a single sentence. The old patient’s daughter next to him also had a really dissatisfied expression, but what could she do? Her father was in great discomfort, but she didn’t dare to talk back to the doctors. She was afraid that if she angered the doctors, the doctors would stall and cause her father to suffer more.
The old patient felt slightly better after some sputum aspiration. He was even able to fall asleep again.
“Tomorrow, go ask the respiratory department head nurse for a heavy face mask like mine. Your standard-issue face mask won’t work here. There’s an extremely high number of infectious diseases in the respiratory department. You need to protect yourself against infection,” Zhu Qianqian informed Zhang Fan after they finished treating the old patient.
“Alright, I’ll go get one tomorrow.” Zhang Fan then asked a question he had been wondering about regarding the old patient. “Why didn’t the doctor in charge of this patient prescribe oxygen therapy to begin with? And why did you instantly prescribe a low-flow oxygen therapy the moment that you were called to check this patient for the night shift?”
“Because oxygen therapy is mostly useless for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Giving him oxygen therapy is mostly just a placebo effect for him. For patients like him, he’ll complain and give you trouble all night long if you don’t act like you’re doing something for him. Giving him some oxygen therapy is to make him feel better,” Zhu Qianqian said quite proudly.
For this night shift, neither Zhu Qianqian nor Zhang Fan slept for the entire night. Zhang Fan had plenty of energy due to his System strengthening his body, while Zhu Qianqian was filled with motivation due to her one year old toddler who drank imported milk formula. They finished Zhu Qianqian’s thirtyish medical reports by the next morning.
“Sigh! I’m so exhausted that I can’t even stand up straight! Doctor Zhang, how about I treat you to some meat buns from my home after we perform the daily morning checkup for the patients? We’ve both been busy all night. I never eat the meat buns from outside, especially not from the meat bun stall that’s set up right in front of our hospital. I’ve seen that meat bun merchant wipe his snot with his hand and then grab meat buns without washing his hands several times already!”
“Oh! Really?” Zhang Fan wasn’t even the slightest bit about to collapse from working all night, but he almost collapsed from hearing Zhu Qianqian’s comment because he would buy meat buns from that particular stall on almost a daily basis! “No need to treat me, but thank you, Doctor Zhu.”
