Back inside the city.

Once the west side was completely stabilized, soon the human forces from here went on and joined the fight in the south.

The Lycans had to retreat immediately. It seems like they also got the news about the West Side and they are gone.

In the middle of the city, all the injured humans were being gathered while the dead bodies of the Lycans were being collected as well.

Sam stood there casually as he observed everything. The healers of the human side are doing a decent job too, but they don't have infinite energy, meanwhile, the injured seemed to be of infinite amount. Sam was contemplating if he should help them out or not.

At this moment, the leader of the whole camp. The young man at Late Stage Divine Plane Initiation that was about to interrogate Sam appeared.

He is panting heavily and his spiritual energy is a bit chaotic. He is a bit exhausted.

If there is another attack, he might have to overexert himself just to defend the city once again.

He looked at Sam with a complicated gaze and said.

"Thank you for saving the city."

With that, he bowed.

Sam looked at him and did nothing to stop him. But the companions of the young man did. They hurriedly raised him and said.

"Young master, there is no need to bow for him. If he had come sooner then there would have been a lot fewer casualties. As a human, he held his hand until now and indirectly killed many people."

Sam looked at the man who spoke. He is a lot younger than the young master here and he seems to be in the Middle Stage of Divine Plane Initiation.

Sam knew that there would be these kinds of people, but he didn't expect one at the front lines like this. After all, these nitpicking, self-righteous idiots are the first ones to run away and find excuses to hide. If not for the impossibility, they would rather go back into their mother's wombs and preach righteous bullshit, than actually come forward and fight.

Sam sized him up with a faint smile

The young master glared at the young man and turned to Sam before introducing himself.

"My name is Jate. May I know your name?"

"Sam" Both of them shook hands.

"We appreciate your help now and I hope that you don't take offense from our friction earlier and continue to help us."

"Of course. But before that, may I know what the situation is? I know I live in seclusion, but I am pretty sure that the strength of neither Lycans nor you should be limited to your cultivation level right?"

Jate chuckled a bit and said.

"Of course not. But this is the current situation right now. We are supposed to block this city because of the fertile land that it has. There is also a special legacy temple under the mansion of the city lord.

It was a blessing from god and it helps humans train their combat ability and cultivation level. Sometimes there are trials that will give out special cultivation techniques, combat techniques, formation designs, weapons what not.

If Lycans take over that place and make this city their base, then things would be dire.

The sneaked up on the city and they brought in their armies. The humans managed to deal with the leaders of the army that came. But some of the higher-level Lycans already started making their way here and they are higher in number.

If they surround the city, defeat would be certain. The formation here is already damaged and it is not equipped to deal with high-level attacks.

So, high-level cultivators from our side went to intercept and they are currently blocking their paths.

The only one right now is the Lycan army which is coming from all three sides. The forbidden forest is the only thing that has yet to be occupied by them and you came from there."

"So, the weak are tasked to defend the city, while the strong are fight elsewhere to keep the balance. But are you sure even if you defend the city successfully, there would be a chance for the high-level cultivators to turn things around?"

"We don't know, we can only hope they do.

Right now, we are still following the unspoken rules of war. Once the high-level cultivators are gone, there is no way they are going to hold those rules up here.

They will either enslave us or they would kill us off directly. If worst comes to worst, the latter option might be our best scenario."

Sam just nodded and looked around.

"The city is shambles. The formation is barely holding up. Your injured are increasing with every wave and it seems like they outnumber you by twenty to one.

Things will just get worse with time.

Your healers are gassing out on top of that. They cannot keep healing everyone like this. The energy drain is one thing, what accompanies that energy drain is the mental drain.

I must say things are not looking well for you."

A lot of people frowned in anger at Sam's assessment. He just laid all of their shortcomings out. It is definitely a blow to morale. They really wanted to bash this guy up.

Sam thought for a moment and said.

"I can help you guys out a bit. It is just that I am having some trouble thinking where to start."

"What can you help us with? You are already showed a great deal with the combat outside."

"Oh that? That is nothing. If you want to have a chance of survival, then you need to have better defenses for the city.

I will tell you, how to fix that. But there is one thing I am curious about."

"What is it?"

"Why are those Lycans, willing to die like that?"

"What do you mean? It is a fucking war. Of course, they are going to die."

One of the young men replied at a seemingly meaningless question. At least that is what they understood. But Sam looked at Jate and asked.

"You know what I mean. Why are they so suicidal? No matter how I look at it, they are in a better position. They can easily wear you guys out in a week or so and they won't even have one-fourth of the current casualties.

They don't need to do such suicidal attacks. And honestly, your combat ability is not that much. You wouldn't be able to hold a candle for them."

"Hmph, they might have better physiques, but they are just beasts in humanoid form."

One of the young men retorted.

Sam looked at him as if he was an idiot.

"Lycans are a race born to hunt and fight. Battling is in their DNA and they are much more patient than a human could ever be.

Please don't tell me, you guys are really smarter than them. Their instinct is enough to destroy your strategy."

Everyone shut up. There is a deafening silence as Sam looked at them and he slowly opened his mouth.

"If my guess is right and it most probably is, there is something important in this city that Lycans wanted to capture or retrieve. That is why they are sending themselves to death.

Tell me, what it is and it will help me prepare better."

As soon as Sam finished his words, several auras are locked in.

Jate looked at him with a frown.

He had many conflicting thoughts before saying.

"We are holding a hostage. During the first attack, one of the Lycan royalty who is only in Divine Plane Initiation is injured and we captured him. Now, these Lycans have gone crazy and they are coming at us like there is no tomorrow.

We tried to communicate, but it is not working. It seems like they would rather die with their royalty here or die trying to save him rather than take a step back and negotiate."

Sam looked at them and shook his head.

"You guys were naïve when you did that.

Do you really think a battling race such as theirs would just compromise like that? Particularly when you are in a weak situation like this? You might have had a better time if you had killed the royalty before.

You just pissed them off so much that even if you kill him now, they wouldn't bother anymore. They will not rest until they rage you to the ground."

Sam sighed as he looked at them.

Everyone was silent. They also understood this at the moment.

Sam clicked his tongue and said.

"Okay, enough of this, let's get started.

But there is one condition for me to help you guys."

"What is it?"

"I need all the Lycan corpses. Jate, you look like a guy with some status, so I want you to use all of your influence and power to get me as many corpses of Lycans as possible. In fact, if you can get some other races' corpses, that would be great too.

So, basically, I won't take any payment or reward for my contribution, all I need are corpses."

Everyone was stumped once again.
