Chapter 52: How Can I Go If You Don’t Let Go?

“My name is Song Xiao,” she told her name to Ye Sui.

“I’m Ye Sui; did you wait because of me?”

Song Xiao nodded. “I guessed you could see ghosts the first time I saw you on the shore the other day.” Last time, Ye Sui had really mistaken her as a malicious ghost, so she didn’t have a chance to speak with her and left immediately.

After being sought by the ghosts for so many times, Ye Sui was already accustomed to them. “Do you have any unfinished business?”

Song Xiao’s face hardened. Soon her tears fell on the wooden floor. “I have a long-time crush on that painter.”

Song Xiao was a victim of campus bullying. She and the painter were students from the same high school, and he was her senior. He was also the only kind person whom she had encountered in her short youth.

Song Xiao was the lead dancer of their school dance club, but because of her cold personality, she was considered arrogant and was despised by others. Therefore, she was often bullied by her schoolmates. They took away her dancing shoes, filled all the books in her desk, grabbed her long hair, and pushed her against the wall…

One day, Song Xiao was sitting on the stairs beside the dance room, covering her face between her knees and weeping.

Then a certain boy, whom she recognized, walked towards her. He was her senior who painted in the atelier downstairs and always held his album silently.

Song Xiao’s cheek was still red and swollen, and the tears could not relieve the pain she felt. Their dislike for Song Xiao only grew deeper and deeper, laughing at her time and again, isolating her and attacking her.

That afternoon, the senior sat down beside Song Xiao without any words of consolation. He just gave her a tissue.

There was too much malice in this world, but Song Xiao saw a small light seep out from the dark sky.

Later, Song Xiao was once again bullied by a girl who pulled her hair and smashed her to the wall. She was surrounded like a clumsy mouse and didn’t even have the strength to struggle.

Yet, a teaching director knocked at the door and took away everyone who bullied Song Xiao. After they left, Song Xiao saw a senior standing across the open door.

Song Xiao’s family was poor. People like her could only study hard to improve their condition.

She heard that the senior had entered the Academy of Fine Arts. She worked hard and later had to go to his city to fill in the volunteer form.

No matter how others bullied Song Xiao, she didn’t care. Only when passing through the studio, she thought there was a person she loved secretly from a distance.

The summer her senior year was over, Song Xiao fell into the water and was dragged inside by the real water ghost, becoming someone else’s scapegoat.

She never had a chance to tell her senior that she had a crush on him for so long.

Later, Song Xiao did her best to save the drowning people every time she saw them.

Song Xiao experienced three years of high school violence on campus. Even though she had endured so much bitterness, she still retained the kindness in her heart.

And those who bullied Song Xiao, those teenagers who were full of hostility, even if they were following the crowd blindly, were still quite hurtful.

But they already couldn’t remember how much harm they had done to Song Xiao.

The time in the lake was so long that Song Xiao thought she would never see her senior again. But one day, she saw him at the riverside.

Her senior’s family was in decline. He painted for others every day just to earn his tuition. When there was no business, he would paint what he liked.

The senior drew Erhai Lake with affection, and Song Xiao gazed at him from nearby.

One day, her senior’s paintings floated into the lake, which he had accidentally dropped into the water and was trying to pick up. Song Xiao was scared since she didn’t want her senior to become someone else’s prey. She must save him.

He had once aided her and brought her out of despair.

Even though Song Xiao was dead and her senior wasn’t aware of her crush on him, Song Xiao still hoped that his life would continue.

After all, his brilliance had lit up the darkness in her life.

After saving her senior, Song Xiao saw that he came to Erhai Lake more and more often. She would frequently see him, but she found herself running out of time, sensing that she was about to leave.

After hearing Song Xiao’s story, Ye Sui saw the teardrops falling from her eyes. Her eyes were already wet. “My request is very simple.”

Ye Sui listened patiently as Song Xiao continued. “Can you help me find him to draw a picture?”
