Liu Man nearly caught a cold. When she got back to her hotel room, she felt lightheaded, so she went to sleep without lunch. A nap ameliorated her state.

When she woke, Liu man reached for the script again. Tomorrow is her second scene, her longest feature. She would need to perform a piano piece, putting finally to use her degree in the instrument.

The music score was in the script, and this piece was also the film’s theme. There weren’t yet lyrics for it, however.

Liu Man gently hummed the melody for the piece. Towards the end, the familiar rings of WeChat interrupted her.

After the crew members were confirmed, the stage manager made everyone a chat group—“Wind Sound Crew Chat”—and informed that, if the director or the producers had any important announcements, they would be relayed there. All the leads and Ye Zian found themselves in the group.

Until now, Liu Man had only added Tang Tu, Yang Huayue, and the stage manager to her contacts.

As expected, an announcement soon beeped in her hand. Manager: “Because of recent modifications to the script, tomorrow’s piano scene will be postponed to the morning after tomorrow, @everyone.”

“Roger that!”

“Roger that!”

Liu Man immediately replied along with the others, “Roger that!”

The stage manager saw Liu Man responding and sent her a private message: “Tomorrow evening, come to the music classroom on the third floor. You will be working with Tang Tu on the piece, ‘The Sound of the Wind,’ in preparation for the piano scene. Please reply when you receive this message.”

“Okay.”

At this moment, another notification from WeChat rang out. Yu Zhan sent an image to her, which he took with his phone.

Liu Man clicked onto the image. The photo was seemingly taken on the balcony of a high apartment. Daylight sprawled atop Paul, her paws facing downward and her eyes narrowed. She was lazily enjoying the sunlight, and her fat belly lay supine.

“Daylight loves the sun,” Liu Man typed.

Yu Zhan was always quick to reply.

“She loves my balcony, and she’s also used to Paul. She’s no longer dying to leave whenever Paul’s in the room, at least. They are now friends, from the looks of it.”

“Thank you.”

“Why?” Yu Zhan sent an emoji of a cute, pouty face.

Liu Man smiled tacitly and responded with an emoji, something she rarely did. The little yellow face had its tongue out. “You are treating Daylight well. I feel like I can never be as good to her as you.”

“Daylight’s obedient, cute—I like her.”

Yu Zhan, as a vet, no less, had no prejudice against animals, but he loved the loyalty of dogs the most. This was his first time keeping a cat.

“I love Paul, too. He sticks by you. Although he looks huge and fierce on the outside, he’s warm on the inside.”

“I feel like we’re just complimenting each others’ pets,” Yu Zhan sent this message, then immediately sent another one, “Are you working right now? I hope I’m not disturbing you.”

“I don’t have a lot of scenes, so I’ve already done my part in the morning. My next scene will be on the day after tomorrow, so I have a lot of time.”

“How does it feel to be an actor? Are your co-workers being nice? Did you get accused of anything? Is anyone not giving you a good time?” Yu Zhan sent a few questions all at once.

Yu Zhan’s caring for her made Liu Man feel warm. She couldn’t resist but smile and continued to type, “Until now, everything’s going fine. I’m just a small extra, and everyone has their attention on the leads. Nobody even cares about me, so why would anyone give me a bad time? Most times, I stay at the hotel. Even if I’m at the actual filming, I would be wandering around and have nothing to do. But today, it was my first time acting in a scene, and the director cut me off a few times. He’s a serious person with high expectations, and he makes me nervous. Fortunately, I finally passed in the end, and he said I was pretty good.”

“Who’s your director?”

“Ye Zian. Do you know him? He’s very famous right now.”

“Nope, don’t know him.”

Yu Zhan didn’t pay much attention to the entertainment circle, and he had never even heard of this name. He opened his WeChat contacts and found a friend who was currently living in Shanghai.

“Do you know who Ye Zian is?”

“?”

“!”

“Has the sun came out from the west side today? You big freak came to find me! Not to mention you are asking me about a director. Are you planning on taking part in a movie? With your good looks, you are more than enough to be a male lead. Ah, such a tragedy, the biggest star in my dad’s company is ugly compared to your appearance.”

TL’s Note: ‘Has the sun came out from the west side today?” is how the Chinese express their astonishment for something.

“Then you know him,” Yu Zhan automatically ignored the trash talk the other person said and grabbed onto what was important.

“I’m not familiar with him; I just met him a few times. He had never cooperated with our company before, but I heard he’s a good person, has good morality, and has high expectations for actors. Why are you asking me about him? What’s going on?”

“Nothing.”

“…”

“I’ve heard Ye Zian is currently filming a movie in Shanghai and had just gone through an opening ceremony yesterday. His movie is invested by Galaxy Films Ltd., and none of the leads is in the first tier. It doesn’t cost a lot, and that’s what Ye Zian likes.”

The cost to produce “The Sound of the Wind” was twenty million, and it was adequate for a movie that didn’t need many expensive special effects, but this WeChat friend of Yu Zhan thought it cost too little.

Hearing that Ye Zian wasn’t a difficult person to get along with, Yu Zhan was relieved.

“Mm, alright, that’s it. Going offline now.”

“Woah woah woah, what attitude is that? I want to unfriend!”

“Boring. You’ve said these exact words about 100 times since we were kids.”

Yu Zhan’s phone rang as notifications from Wei Bo came. He stopped talking to his friend, who was spamming angry emojis in the chat.

Yu Zhan logged onto Wei Bo. The list of people he was following was empty, with only one name, “Princess Man.”

He clicked onto her account and saw Princess Man had just posted a Wei Bo.

“Our Daylight is enjoying her sunlight bath!” Her attachment was what Yu Zhan had just sent her on WeChat.

This picture was so cute that it received a few hundred likes just as Liu Man posted it.

“Where did this Alaska come from? He’s cooperating well with Daylight!”

“Didn’t sis say Daylight was being cared for by someone else? This foster care service seems so good, and there’s even a dog accompanying her when she wants to play and have sunlight baths!”

“Why do I think this cat and this dog are couples? Are they cross-species lovers?”

“Sis, you are sending us a wave of cat food…”

“It’s dog food!”

TL’s Note: In Chinese, there’s a saying that those who are single are ‘Single Dogs,’ so couples who are showing their love for each other are sending waves of dog food. (Weird saying, but that’s how it is.)

“Who cares what kind of food it is. I’m a single dog, and my eyes are prickling from all this cute love.”

Liu Man had time right now, so she replied to the fans’ comments. Right at this moment, her Wei Bo received two new notifications, and she clicked to open them:

“Yuzhan has just liked and reposted your Wei Bo.”

“Tang Tu has just liked and reposted your Wei Bo.”
