Chapter 159: Strange
As night fell, everybody in town began to enter dreamland except for Baiyi who was sitting alone by the window of his room. The bright moonlight spilled into the room through the window, shining at his armor, making it gleamed in silver-ish light.
The surrounding of the house was serene, with only the faint buzzing noise and chirping of the insects. The temperature was neither hot nor cold, making it a suitable night for a lovely sweet dream.
"The night is beautiful," Baiyi used his Mana and towed a chair towards him. He sat down and put his feet up on the windowsill. Casually, he picked up a kitty coin bank and with the help of the bright moonlight, he started to loosen the soil for the sunflower in the container.
Before long, he suddenly raised his head and glimpsed at the other window that was shadowed in the dark at the other side of the room. Without any warning, he threw the kitty coin bank directly over to the dark window.A loud dull 'thud' sounded from the dark followed by a muffled sound that sounded like a heavy weight had just fallen on the ground. The kitty coin bank seemed to have hit something before it leisurely spinned twice mid-air and flew back towards Baiyi like a boomerang. Lifting his hand high, he snatched the coin bank back and rubbed its surface clean as he muttered, "How noob can you be?"
All at once, a sudden movement suddenly disturbed the tranquil night. Like a siren blaring up, a series of 'plop plop plop' sound instantly resonated from Mia's house surrounding. In spite of that, Baiyi continued to sit calmly by the window and started to count.
"One, two, three..."
By the time he counted to five, all the sound died down and the night returned to its former peace. The only sound in the air was Baiyi's disappointed whisper, "What? Only five of you? And with such low skills, too? Sigh, you guys have underestimated me too much!"
Quietly, he jumped out through the window and walked around Mia's house. After he had made a full circle, he had all five preys in his hands... Five suspicious people dressed in black.
"Oh? A caravan who brought along assassins with them? Hmm, you almost had me fooled there!" Baiyi sneered and chained the five unlucky assassins with magic before dragging them towards the field behind Mia's house.
Actually, at the very beginning, after confirming that the caravan that suddenly appeared out of nowhere had no anomaly, like the other townspeople, Baiyi did not pay much attention to them anymore. Once in a while, Baiyi would keep his eyes on them but there was still no signs of suspicious activities. The traders were making their deals normally, getting free food from the townspeople, flirting with the young girls in town and other than a few suspicious guys whom Baiyi had suspected were selling artilleries, there was no traces of anything being wrong at all...... Until their leader took the initiative to visit the house and tried to take advantage of Mia's in front of him. Or, even more incriminatingly, he left behind an exquisite Eavesdropping Rune on that small little cup that he was handed.
The method that he used was very subtle and clever. The rune that he left behind was quite an impressive one, too. It allowed a person who possessed no magic to leave it on the cup where it would be entirely invisible to the naked eyes. The magical fluctuation was so subtle and faint that even Baiyi was not aware of it. At the same time, the scope of the bug was particularly wide, allowing it to hear every movement in the house even if the cup was kept in a cabinet.
The sheer fact that a mere rune had such a profound effect meant that the 'technology' here had surpassed the high-tech bug that was created on Earth. One could say it was even more advanced and sophisticated than the runes that the Voidwalkers knew. Had Baiyi not noticed the strange tattoo on that man's face earlier, he would not have discovered the rune at all. Looked like it was not only the design of the women's clothing that had been progressing well in this world.
As a matter of fact, it was pure bad luck that Jimmy Jr. gave himself away at the very end of the visit. The tattoo on his face was actually invisible to the naked eyes including the magical sight ability that was enchanted on the visor of a Soul Armature. The tattoo was able to deceive 99% of the eyes in this world. Unfortunately for him, Baiyi belonged to that 1% that could see the tattoo clearly. He had a Psychic Energy that was exceptionally strong and no matter what he looked at or touched, he would habitually insert part of his Psychic Energy into it to scan the things in his surrounding. For that reason, he noticed the faint trace of magical fluctuation that was emitting out from his face and instinctively, he released a Visual Enhancing Spell and that was how he discovered that tattoo.
If it wasn't for the fact that he just so happened to run into Baiyi coincidentally, there would be no flaws in his plans. After all, other than a crazy or mental person, nobody would wantonly squander away their precious Psychic Energy like Baiyi did .
Now, a few problems had arisen. Why did this person deliberately put an Eavesdropping Rune in Mia's house? With Mia's father's status, it would be like killing a chicken using a forbidden spell!
Then, who exactly did he wanted to eavesdrop on? Baiyi? But that's impossible. It would not be worth the effort without knowing his identity first. More importantly, what exactly did they want to do? Why did they choose to do it to Mia's family? On top of that, it was done using such a secretive and subtle method, too! Had it not been for Baiyi, who was over-cautious and deliberately set magical traps at every entrance of Mia's house, he would not have managed to capture all five of them in such a quiet manner.
Even the Voidwalkers could not come up with any answers at all. With no other choice, Baiyi decided to ask the captives directly. Without any hesitation, he cast a sound barrier over the wheatfield and prepared to wake those unconscious people up. But, before that, he used his Psychic Energy to carefully search their bodies first. Four men and one woman. Other than one storage pouch and their own weapons, there was nothing else on their bodies.
Hmm... They didn't even carry suicide poison? How unprofessional can these guys be! Baiyi said to the Voidwalkers before making fun of a certain female assassin, Wow, look at how far your Shadow Assassins have fallen!
"Excuse me? How can these people be Shadow Assassins? Even if the organization declined, it would never produce such rookies who don't even know how to dodge a magical trap, okay?" The Assassin retorted angrily.
But those were not ordinary magical traps! Those were the traps that Baiyi had set up all by himself. As a sneaky and sly old man who had lived for several thousands years, it was not too devillish to play tricks on a few Shadow Assassins, right?
"Their Shadowmeld Technique are still incomplete! Like the Magi-breaker last time, these people are only half-cocked and they are definitely not taught by the organization. Somebody must have stolen our secret technique and trained them in secret," The Assassin continued to explain.
There are people who actually dare to steal your things? Unbelievable! Baiyi thought to himself and did not continue the discussion with her. It was not the right time to talk about such a thing after all.
So, without warning, five streams of water were splashed on those five people who were knocked out in five different fancy methods. When they opened their eyes, the first thing that entered their sight was a gray armor that was standing in front of them. Their bodies were all tied tightly in a row, they were bound so tightly that they could not even move one finger, let alone looking at each other.
"I'll ask and you answer," Baiyi announced before he reached out a hand to break off the female assassin's little finger. A loud scream of pain suddenly pierced through the eardrums of the other four men, the ear-splitting sound resonated in the sound barrier, making the impact even worse as it echoed louder.
The remaining men were taken aback. B-But you haven't asked any question yet! W-Why did you suddenly hurt her? Worse, they could not see exactly what Baiyi did and this imperceptibly imposed a heavier tension on them.
To their horror, Baiyi did not proceed to ask but instead, he kept on torturing the female assassin. Before she fell into his trap, that woman was going to hurt Mia and naturally, he would not show any mercy to her at all.
The eerie scream of pain from the female assassin had left the few men's brains buzzing with dizziness and their backs were completely soaked in cold sweat. The heavy tension had completely destroyed the bravado of the shaddy assassins and finally, one of them could not take it anymore, "I'll talk! I'll talk! I'll tell you everything! Whatever you want to know!"
"Oh? You're so hasty, huh? I still have many tricks up my sleeve that I haven't tried yet, you know," Baiyi ditched the dying female assassin and walked towards the man who talked, "Alright, tell me. Who are you people?"
"W-We are the devotees of the Godsfall sect," the Assassin quickly replied and before Baiyi could ask more question, he already blurted out everything that he knew.
The instance he heard the name 'Godsfall sect', he knew that it was a heretic cult. No wonder they were so sneaky to the point that they would dispatch assassins if they did not get along with a person. The cult had existed for a very long time but no one knew exactly how long. None of the Voidwalkers had heard of the name before so it must be some hidden cult that was just developing and gaining fame.
In truth, the number of heretic cult in the realm was very few and far between. Be it the God's Grace of Isythre, the Dragon Knight of Gouve, or the complicated organization from Marle, they usually would go all out cracking down on such cults. Therefore, the chances of them surviving and growing was extremely slim... Or at least, that was what Baiyi thought before this.
However, after listening to the man's confession, he finally realized that Godsfall's capability had far exceeded his imagination. Not only did they have a large number of followers, they were a tight-knit organization that was well-funded. Among them were many powerful people who had a wide range of authorities all around the world. Other than the barbarians of the Northern Wasteland, both the Southland and the Northland were actually under their control and there were even shadows of them in other big realms.
The Eavesdropping Rune that Baiyi was concerned about was the work of some of the senior members in the sect. From this one matter, Baiyi could clearly see the quality of the cult followers. They were definitely not a disorderly motley crew that was made up of good-for-nothing members. Even the assassins that were really noob in Baiyi's eyes were actually above average under normal circumstances.
Worse still, the information that he had obtained from the low-level members were already so horrifying, what strength were they still hiding? How did they manage to develop and grow to such an extent under the constant crackdown of the Church? It was absolutely impossible! How could the organization that had grown to such a level able to hide themselves away from the public? There would still be at least some telltale signs no matter how secretive they were! Why did the Church not take any actions at all? Could it be that all of the paladins under the One True God had all decided to change careers and became a hentai, too?
Or, could it be that, the sect was already so strong that even the Church could do nothing against them?
Without a doubt, the assassin was not able to answer all of the questions. With a proud look on his face, he exclaimed, "We don't trust in God! Our only purpose in this world is to overthrow that supreme God who is sitting high up in the air! Give back our blue and clean world to us!"
Hearing that, a thought began to form in Baiyi's mind. Is this cult made up of a bunch of idiots? Who the hell came up with this insane deception? Worse still, there are people in this world who actually believe in this lie?
